I filed for my photography business license the day before my 65th birthday because Grandma Moses got discovered at 65, so I'm a day ahead of the old gal and she did OK!
My Photography Journey
My grandfather was fascinated by gadgets and had a particular love for the nicest film and movie cameras. I must have taken after him in that regard, since I started at a young age with a Kodak Instamatic camera with Flash Cubes and also spent time experiencing the magic of Polaroid instant cameras. I always took the vacation pictures and usually had at least a point and shoot camera at family functions and holidays. From 2005 until 2009, I helped build two churches in Mexico with my church, Redeemer in Austin, TX. I got more serious about photography and produced animated photo CD slide shows with soundtracks for the other team members so that they would have a remembrance of each mission to share with their friends and families. I've had my own computer repair business (Mr. PC), since 1997, so I naturally gravitated towards digital photography as it came on the scene. Half of my joy comes from capturing a unique image, the other half comes in my "digital darkroom" where a lot of magic takes place. I've always had the technical computer skills to edit and share my work, but I've had to work at the artistic aspects. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my friend and fellow nature photographer Judi Sawyer. In late 2014, she challenged me to post at least one photo a day on Facebook for a year. This same discipline had taken her photography to the next level. I took up the daily challenge on January 1, 2015 and have been posting ever since. It has made me a far better observer of the natural world around us and the subject matter has proven to be limitless. As Yogi Berra once said, "You can observe a lot by watching!" I have had other generous mentors and to a person, when asked how I could repay them, the answer was always to pay it forward. Thanks to my many friends on Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor and other platforms who have enjoyed the images I've shared daily for over 10 years, encouraging me to take it to the next level.
